The purpose of English in school should be for the student to be able to express themselves in writing when they leave. Comprehension, grammar and composition should all feed into and support that objective.
It's not enough to tell students to write better. They have to be shown how to do it.
We attach meaning to words. The word 'mountains' makes us think of challenges. And 'valleys'? We don't talk or think about them much. There is the crest and trough association too - up is thought of as good, and down ... not so much.
You can't separate writing from grammar, because sentences are at the core of writing, and constructing correct sentences is what grammar is all about.
We've always been told to write. In school it was "write your answers" or "write an essay". Later, it was "write a thesis" or "write an argument". Even later, "write a review/blog/book/opinion piece". We've always been told to write, but we haven't been taught to write.
