We haven't been taught to write

We've always been told to write. In school it was "write your answers" or "write an essay". Later, it was "write a thesis" or "write an argument". Even later, "write a review/blog/book/opinion piece". We've always been told to write, but we haven't been taught to write.

I've always been a reader. That helped me a lot when writing in school. I worked in the corporate world in various roles unconnected to writing. I wrote emails mostly and when I did, I wrote and edited my work on what I will call 'instinct', for want of a better word. A few years ago, I decided to switch careers and work as an independent editor. Through my training, mentoring and assignments, a new world of the written word came alive for me.

Using the craft of writing is a bit like using LEGO. Once you know all the parts you can use (in LEGO its your bricks, your base plate, your tiles and many more elements), and how you can use them, your options to create something great, to express yourself better, multiply.

So, here I am now. A writing tutor, teaching school students, postgraduate students and working professionals to look differently at the words on a page. And to unlock all their writing tools to create something that makes their readers want to read on.

Here are a couple of my newsletters on the craft of writing.

Follow me here on stck.me to get regular insights and resources on how to write better. I promise it will be enlightening and fun.

Regards,

Michelle
